@ Lake Tahoe

We’re @: North Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Nevada

What’s here: The second deepest lake in the United States. Do you remember which was the deepest? Lake Tahoe is the also highest lake of its size in the United States with an average surface elevation of 6,225 ft. So I guess you could say this lake has altitude!

How did it get here: Lake Tahoe’s basin formed about two million years ago when a break in the Earth’s crust caused blocks of land to push against each other. The blocks that moved up created the Carson Range on the east and the Sierra Nevada on the west. Down-dropped blocks created the Lake Tahoe Basin in between. It then filled with streams, snow and rain but it wasn’t until The Great Ice Age that glaciers completed the formation of what we consider Lake Tahoe today.

What to do: If fishing, kayaking, sailing, hiking, rock climbing or cycling aren’t enough for you, you might enjoy taking a helicopter ride high above the Sierra Nevada.

Wait, I thought people came there to ski! You’re right. Heavenly, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood, Sierra at Tahoe, Mt. Rose and Squaw Valley are just a few places near the lake that you can ski from late December to April. Our favorite run is the Gunbarrel at Heavenly. There’s also nordic skiing and snowmobiling, too!

Do you feel lucky? On the Nevada side of the lake, near the California borders and in nearby Reno there are a wide variety of casinos. Though we’re not much for gambling, we’ve found that they often host exceptional artists as entertainment. If you’re coming to town be sure to find out who’s performing.

What to eat: If you asked the kids they’d say “dessert first!” After an amazing buffalo dish at the Lone Eagle Grille in Incline Village, Nev. the kids were surprised with an enormous “Baked Tahoe.” Jake’s on the Lake in Tahoe City, Calif. channels the Hawaiian Islands. The fish dishes were amazing but the Udon noodle bowl was the kid’s favorite. Not to be missed is the Maui Mud Pie. Aloha!

Where to stay: Lake Tahoe Accommodations has one of the most extensive inventories of vacation rentals around the lake. They represent properties in both California and Nevada from North to South Lake Tahoe. These folks know the area and are happy to help you plan your visit to the Tahoe area.
