We’re @ Mount Rushmore National Memorial near Keystone, S.D.
What’s here: The heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved in granite. How cool is that?
Why now? It’s September. The weather’s perfect and no one’s here. Any questions?
Interesting fact: The Lakota Sioux called this mountain Six Grandfathers. The Americans abbreviated it to four founding fathers. Guess something got lost in the translation.
Overheard: “Where’s Obama?”
Why you should go: Do you know any other country that does 60-foot carvings of its most beloved presidents on the side of a mountain? Neither do we.
Who’s here: We met a lot of people who told us Mt. Rushmore was on their bucket list. It was at the top of ours, too.
We’re staying in: A rental home from Executive Lodging in Deadwood, S.D.
When to go: Late spring and early fall really rock. Pardon the pun. But they do. Summers get very, very busy. And hot.
